Defence is a multi-faceted domain. AI can effect significant improvement in performance from the sharp end of battlefield assistance through to routine logistical support. Defence in depth relies on information; data fusion and surveillance are areas in which AI techniques married to other technologies can have great impact on Defence effectiveness.
To focus on the deployment of AI in Defence applications.
To promote interaction between the Defence, Defence Science and AI communities.
Topics of interest to the workshop include but are not limited to:
The workshop will run for a full day. It will be limited to approximately 20 participants. There may be other invited attendees as observers. This workshop replaces one of the two 1995 meetings of the Defence Science and Technology Organisation Special Interest Group in Artificial Intelligence.
People wishing to attend the workshop should submit an extended abstract/full paper on their proposed paper/research area by 15 September. These will be reviewed by the program committee. From those submitting, approximately 20 participants will be invited to participate in the workshop.
Full papers in camera ready form will be required to submit a full text paper (up to 12 pages in length) 5 weeks prior to the workshop. These will be reproduced in the proceedings of the workshop.
Dr Goss is Chair of the ACS VIC Branch AI Special Interest Group and Secretary of the DSTO SIGAI. He works in the area of applied AI. He chaired the second Australian Cognitive Science Conference in 1993, and an IJCAI Workshop in Situation Awareness in 1991.
Mr Graeme Murray is Head of Operations and Performance Analysis, and formerly directed an active applied AI group. He is a defence scientist with 25 years experience in operational research.
Dr Grahame Smith is Director of the CRC in Intelligent Decision Systems. He has been involved in research and consulting in AI for 25 years.
Dr Greg Gibbon is a defence science information technologist working in surveillance and applied AI. He is also active in AI research groups at ANU and Sydney University.
