A Wednesday evening visit to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve provides a unique chance to see a variety of rare Australian animals. Tidbinbilla is around 30km from Canberra in a moist valley in the Tidbinbilla mountains, one of the more spectacular mountain areas near near Canberra.
The fauna at Tidbinbilla includes both semi-captive species in large enclosures from all over Australia (the emus would probably deny they were captive at all) and the local wild fauna. Semi-captive species include koalas and a number of kangaroo species. Wild fauna include grey kangaroos, black and red neck wallabies, wombats, ringtail and brushtail possums, and sugar gliders. There is a reasonable chance of seeing a greater glider, a rare cat-sized gliding possum; and barking owls and powerful owls also haunt these hillsides.
Bus transport from the conference venue will be provided. The local park rangers will be our guides for the evening.
